Town Project

So I’ve been fascinated with this city generator and I’ve posted here a few things that would pretty much show my idea of what I was trying. Over the last few months I was testing out using generators to create a town and extracting a city layout and then use a building generator to create a city.

I’ve managed to make the layout of the whole village and even have it by the waters. I’m hoping to be able to make every house accessible and possibly made customizable. I used a generator to map out the layout of the city. It exported out a json file that can be read by a 3d viewer by the same developer that wrote the city generator layout. I then exported the 3d blocks out as an obj file. Now i can take all that and put it in 3ds Max.

I was hoping to use Blender but later realized that I’m not that too versed in the program. There’s too many things I can do faster in Max but I’m not yet sure how to achieve the same functions in blender. I’m sure it’s there I just need to look more into it. Modeling is such a specific way to doing things. always figuring out puzzle like paths and connections to make something look properly made.

Moving on, I found a bunch of freebies in unity so I’m able to have a placeholder character I can use to run around the game and measure out scale. It was kind of tricky to figure out the scale with the model I’ve created and building cities for it.

actually there was one thing that was interesting with my way of making each building. I knew how to model well in 3ds max but I needed to make 95 houses and buildings. There was no way I could make it all custom by myself. So I needed a builder tool. With my ways of learning how to make stuff in blender. The one thing I really enjoyed to do was to find plugins to build anything. So the one thing I found was a house builder, and it was actually quite fun.

The tool helps you make a floors, windows, roofs, everything super quick. and this way I could uniformly make the whole town look consistent within itself. So I proceeded to make the entire town by myself with this tool. The tricky part was to do it with the block layout I’ve already created. Now the obj that was rendered in the viewer had elevation. But I always look for ways to improve it and also look at the skyline of the town itself. Hoping there’s more ways to make it better compositionally. I then overlapped the existing block town layout and built the houses within it. It was able to make 95 houses, I can’t believe I did that. Just like every modeler, I had some 3d model stash I use as place holders.

Honestly this was such a fun project and I’ve barely started. I’ve reached a point where I can look at it and see where I should take it. It would be cool to instead of just dressing it up in the dev mode. It would be cool to make that as the actual game itself. Make the whole game a multiplayer game so everyone can help me develop the town. they can all pick a house to live in and it’s essentially a sandbox-ish game itself. Not really sure, I’d like to find a dev to really help me actually make the game because I’m definitely not good enough to code.

So we’ll see how far i’ll get to this project, ’cause this is just one of those fun little experiment.
